I created a series of punch-needle pieces in 2020 that look like handwritten notes on lined paper. These works inhabit the space between memory and distance and recreate place. The series references a blank page to be filled later, like an unfinished letter. I came back to it a few years later to add some text in reference to bittersweet feelings spanning friendship through a pandemic, diasporic family, and beyond.
Materials: Baby yarn, sentimental musings between friends gearing up to collaborate across a distance
From the Artist: "Though I didn’t use the kit for my piece, I was enchanted opening it. The materials brought up a lot of nostalgic feelings for me as I went through each one. It had me feeling inspired and open to the part of my practice that used to illustrate. I went straight to my sketchbook. Appreciate y’all 🫶🏾"
About the Artist: I received my BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Originally from the Bay Area, I am a Nigerian American teaching artist, teaching in Chicago and working within craft as a mechanism to bridge hard feelings with soft materials. I work through autonomy, intergenerational trauma, chronic illness, magical realism, and question where we draw the line on disability.
