Artist Statement: Lila Schaefer works across mediums in sculpture and watercolor, exploring the relationship between spaces interior and exterior to the body. Her sculptures combine soft, handmade textiles with structural materials, while her watercolors investigate these spatial relationships unbound by physical constraint. She received her B.A. in Studio Art & Visual Culture from Bates College and is currently launching a design brand, Living Things, that anthropomorphizes functional objects.
About The Piece: This piece came about as I was painting something else and started to enjoy the scrap piece of paper I was testing watercolors shades on more than the actual piece I was supposed to be working on. In the spirit of play, I leaned into this and intuitively created these spatial relationships using watercolors, colored pencil, pen, and glue from the Art Kit.
Art Materials: Watercolor, colored pencil, black pen on paper.

"In his talk at Yale in 1972, Canadian American painter Philip Guston described art as a serious form of play. This challenge has been a great opportunity to embrace that message, and it is so important we have organizations like Give Kids Art that take access to art supplies and education seriously." – Lila Schaefer
