Artist Statement: Lauren is a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Although her primary medium is typically film and photo, illustration and painting have been a lifelong practice and exploration of hers. Her work calls upon the fluidity of the natural world and the inherent bizarreness of creation, inviting the supposition of whether or not you are awake or in dreams and leaving you to consider the likely reality that you are somehow both.
About This Piece: I was inspired by instinct and electricity. I was inspired initially by the color pallet of the glitter glue tube from the Art Kit, and wanted to keep building the pallet around the vibrancy of the pink and purple. I aimed for colors that felt strong and grounded, while trying to maintain the whimsy that is innately tied to true fearlessness. I chose organic shapes and allowed the water and charcoal to take on shapes on their own, allowing them to bleed and be smudged. When I thought of fearlessness, I instantly knew I wanted to depict a woman. From there, it was just a step by step process of adding an element, taking a step back for a moment, and, in the spirit of the prompt, choosing my next move by how much it excited me.
Art Materials: Watercolor, charcoal, and pen on paper.

"I loved being able to support an organization like this in a way that made sense to my brain, and I love that in participating I may have helped in some way open the door for children who may also find that this medium is what makes the most sense to their brain, and is the way that they can leave their impact on the world." – Lauren Chappell
