As an adult who recently returned to school to pursue a midlife career change, I have been awed by all the things I still have to learn about the world. When I asked myself what still makes me wonder, the first thing that popped into my head was my anatomy professor saying, “To understand the body, we have to understand cells.” I challenged myself to approach my piece as a kid would, using only the materials provided in the kit. To that end, I’ve made a paper quilt in the shape of a house because, as I’ve learned recently, the body is essentially a house of cells.

Materials: Paper, watercolor, marker, embroidery floss, stick from the backyard

From the Artist: "It’s surprisingly difficult (and fun!) to make something with unfamiliar materials meant for kids. I had a great time learning and relearning through the process of making something meaningful to me."

About the Artist: Cortney Philip is a Chicago-based fiber artist who takes inspiration from under-appreciated aspects of nature, anatomy textbooks, and cataloguing. She has shown work at the Greenleaf Art Center, Woman Made Gallery, and many others.
